School Dropping Out Prevention

This project was set up in 2009 in Kandal and Kampong Speu provinces, teaching the rural, vulnerable children additional classes of Khmer literature, mathematics, physics and chemistry.  The project objective is to enhance the knowledge and the capacity of rural poor primary and high school students to prepare for future exams, and to contribute to a reduction in the rates of students dropping out from school and illiteracy, and its goal is to improve education standards in rural areas, contributing to increased local human resources for community development.

The project focuses on the poorest children, orphans, children affected by HIV/AIDS and domestic violence, children from female head of household and low income families, children that have been forced to work by their parents to support large families, and children that have been relocated from place to place.

The project has resulted in the poorest children and youth living in rural areas having a chance to go to the KAD classes free of charge, obtaining additional knowledge and passing the exams that they had previously failed or not had an opportunity to sit.  This helps the students progress towards higher education, and assists in the development of human resources to help develop rural communities.  The project also is helping to reduce the rate of illiteracy, crime, land conflicts, domestic violence and human trafficking in rural areas.
