Basic Dental Service for the Most Vulnerable Children in and around Phnom Penh, Cambodia

In 2008 KAD received a grant from New Zealand Embassy in Thailand under the Head of Mission Fund to start the “Basic Dental Service for Orphans and Street Children in and around Phnom Penh, Cambodia” in cooperation with International University.

The purpose of the project is to provide basic dental treatment for deprived orphans and street children in and around Phnom Penh, including extraction of painful and abscessed teeth, simple dental restorations, cleaning, fissure sealants, fluoride applications, and oral health education. Each child was provided with a toothbrush and toothpaste.

During the period of 2008, more than 5,000 orphans and street children (both girls and boys) have obtained dental treatment.

The results and impacts of the project were to dramatically improve the quality of life for orphans and street children, as they received good quality dental treatment free of charge, reducing dental pain and improving their ability to eat and sleep.

In 2009 KAD received a grant from Australian Embassy under the DAP Fund to provide dental care for disabled children and adults at the newly established KAD dental clinic in Ta Kmao and also at International University. During that period, more than 6,000 disabled children and adults were dentally treated. The results and impacts of the project were to dramatically improve the quality of life for disadvantaged children and adults, as they received good quality dental treatment free of charge, reducing dental pain and improving their ability to eat and sleep.
