Community Health Education


Mrs. Prach Mony, health educator was employed to provide the villagers with health education which took place twice a month. This was done in each village at a time and during 2011, she has gone to 11 villages including Dok Por, Kork Phnau, Chak Kambeth, Thmor Bang, Trakiet, Bak Chenhchean, Samraong Tong Leur, Samraong Tong Krom, Samraong Tong Kandal, Chong Boeng and Rong kor and 756 villagers, most of them were women, were educated on health issues such as hygiene and sanitation, birth-spacing, health care for baby and child, antenatal and postnatal care, respiratory inflammation, tuberculosis and oral health care. In addition, the health educator gave Vitamin A to children as well.

I. Health Education for Children and Teenagers
1. Hygiene and Sanitation
60 children and teenagers were put in class for one-hour health education. Water and large plastic bowls, soaps and towels were available outside the class on the bed. The people who were involved in this project were namely project manager, kindergarten teachers, and educator. Educational strategies were to show the participants how to properly clean their limbs and body and clothes by using soap and ashes. The educator showed the participants how to clean – asked the questions to them and let them do it once at a time.  The children and teenagers were educated how to use clean water for drinking including boiling water and water filter tank. The children were asked to sing a song titled “always clean” and educated how to clean their teeth to avoid tooth decay and get vitamin A and nutrition because some of children spit it out when dripping into their mouths. The children and teenagers were allowed to practice the cleaning of their hands. According to the notices of educator, they didn’t know how to clean their hands properly and most of them have never cleaned their hands with soap at all. Their hands were full of dirt. Mr. Lim Sokha, a dental nurse trained the teachers and staff of KAD Kampong Speu Areas Support Unit on teeth brushing techniques so that they assist in educating the children how to brush their teeth in correct manner. In addition, the children were provided with toothpastes and toothbrushes for daily practice. Normally, the children were asked to keep their toothpastes and toothbrushes at KAD office. In the morning, before starting their classes, the children brushed their teeth under supervision of their teachers.

II. Health Education for Women and Men
25-45 women and men were invited to attend each health education session because they have influence on the whole family, especially on children. The educator used the poster and booklet as the educational tool.

1. Diarrhea
The educator explained about its symptom, causes of diarrhea, prevention method, and food for diarrhea patient.

2. Birth-Spacing
The educator explained to the participants how to use the birth-spacing pill, its effect, and advantage, to use birth-spacing injection, its effect and advantage, to do condom-used birth spacing and how it is used before and after having sex and its storage, to insert birth-spacing ring into uterus and into arm and its advantage and to do the birth spacing by tying sperm tube and cervix.

3. Care for Baby and Child
The educator explained how to provide care to newly-born baby, how to suckle a baby after delivery, how to practice toward newly-born baby until the age of 6 months, 9 months and the child aged 6 months until 2 years and the child aged from 2 years onward.

4. Education on Mother’s and Child’s Health
The educator explained about the medical check-up at the health center during the first month after stopping menstruating, antenatal and postnatal care.

5. Respiratory Inflammation
The educator explained about the first symptom, the serious symptom and preventive method.

6. Tuberculosis
The educator explained about the symptom, infection and non-infection, preventive method, treatment and consequence when having no treatment.
