Dental and General Health Services for Prisoners in Cambodia

In 2007, KAD received a grant from German Embassy in Cambodia, and partnered with the Cambodian Tooth Angel Project from New Zealand, to carry out the dental services project for prisons throughout Cambodia.

The purpose of the project is to provide dental treatment for both male and female prisoners in Cambodia, such as examination and consultation, extraction, filling, minor surgery, cleaning, and canal treatment, along with the examination of general health problems. The project goal is to improve the health of prisoners.

Apart from prisoners, prison wardens and their children and the children of prisoners also underwent dental treatment. To date, several thousand prisoners and prison wardens have been provided with dental treatment and general health services.

The results and impacts of the project were to dramatically improve the conditions of Cambodian prisoners, as they received good quality dental treatment free of charge, reducing dental pain and improving prisoners’ ability to eat and sleep. The improvement in dental health associated with this project led to improvements in the general health of the prisoners.
