Story of Torn Sochanthea


Torn Sochanthea is female, 7 years old, living with her father, grandparents in Angkor Chea village, Samraong Tong commune, Samraong Tong district, Kampong Speu province. Her parents were divorced and after that her mother got married to a new husband and her father work away from home. Chanthea has neither brothers nor sisters. She is a single child. She has suffered from the enteritis for about a year. She has been sent to clinics and hospitals for treatment, but sometimes, she gets better just for a while and then she relapses that requires her to get frequent treatment. She is given enough food, but not full of nutrient and proper clothes. The grandparents pay much attention to taking care of their grandchild such as provision of food, clothing, school materials, preparation for school, health care, hygiene, etc. Sothea is well-mannered, corrigible, friendly helpful and honest. She like playing the games played the boys. For her education, she studies grade 1. She pays attention to her study and always has enough school materials. Her study result is medium. At home, she helps do some small housework like house sweeping, washing-up and baby minding (the baby of her cousin). She reads her books and completes homework given by her teacher and also plays with the neighboring children. She is happy to learn at KAD center and wants to complete all levels of education. When growing up, she wants to be a doctor because she wants to help treat the patients, her grandparents.

Sothea’s father is Tip Sophat, 32 years old, working for NGO in other areas and occasionally come to visit home and his daughter. Nowadays, she lives with her grandparents who take attentive care of her. The grandmother helps teach her and admonish her to learn herself at night time. The living standard of the grandparents is medium. They own a proper house, but now the grandfather has fallen sick that makes the living a bit difficult and especially they have a bit difficulty taking care of their granddaughter. In addition, they have an old motorbike used to travel to the rice paddy. The family has gotten a loan from the private microcredit institution to cure the sickness of the grandfather. However in the future they want their granddaughter to complete the university level because they want her to have a good job and get well-paid to support the family when old grandparents grow incapacitated.

The teacher who teaches her class in person expressed her opinion in terms of Sothea’s attitude that she is a good student who usually listen to the teacher and try very hard to study.
