T-Shirt Weaving Handicraft for Community Unemployed Youths

Project Activities:

The project has opened the 3-month skill training sessions in T-shirt weaving which 50 youths from remote villages of Kampong Speu are strictly selected to attend. The project is located in Tra Kiet village, Trapaing Kong commune, Samraong Tong district, Kampong Speu province, but the target people were chosen from various underserved villages under other communes and districts. The project is integrated into the Community Vulnerable Children Development Center owned by KAD and in which the learning classes have just been constructed.

Currently, we have bought a plot of 50ms x 150ms land in Trakiet village, Trapaing Kong commune, Samraong Tong district, Kampong Speu province which would be intended to construct the center called “ The Community Vulnerable Children Development Center”. All the existing projects and activities would be integrated into the new center and then, the new other projects and activities would be initiated as well. The center would need one 10m x 12m office room, one 10m x 12m medical room, one 10m x 12m library room and one 18m x 12m volunteer building, one learning building with 8 classrooms and one vocational training building with 8 classrooms as well. In addition, there would be agricultural areas for fish pond, chicken and vegetable farms. The office, medical and library rooms and the volunteer building will be built from cement and bricks and the learning and vocational training classes will be constructed from zinc.  In addition, the fences and gate will be constructed from cement, bricks and metal nets around the land and in the land area, fruit trees such as mango, coconut, custard apple, star apple, jack fruit etc. The gardens with mixed flowers will be made. Up to now, KAD has just finished the construction of learning building which will be used as the T-shirt weaving skill training classes.

KAD has requested for funding from Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany to buy the hand-weaving tools and make MoU with garment factories to get weaving thread for training and for producing T-shirt. After the 3-month training, the classes have become the place to produce T-shirt and the trainees have been allowed to work to make T-shirt to get monthly wages. The finished products are sent to the factories and some income from the production of T-shirt is for monthly wages for our target groups and some other income is kept for project sustainability or expansion after the funding from Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany has ended.

The target groups are the youths who are school drop-outs, unemployed, affected by HIV/AIDS, domestic violence and at highest risk of abuses, trafficking and sexual exploitation. All these people were taught how to use the hand weaving tool, to fix and maintain it and to weave good quality of T-shirt. The weaving tool is used by hand and is not related to electric power at all. It is made from iron and can be bought in Cambodia. Three trainers are employed to train the trainees how to weave T-shirt, manage and supervise the training classes and trainees and another one project manager is employed to manage the project, to monitor its activities and to make monthly report on it.
